Acacia Creations began back in 2007 when Maura, Acacia Creations’ founder, moved to Nairobi, Kenya as a 23 year old to help displaced refugees across East Africa. It was there she noticed that despite the wealth of talent, resourcefulness and determination in the camps, residents had few opportunities to earn a fair and dignified living. The missing component was opportunity, and Maura saw a simple solution: create employment and generate income through the rich handcraft traditions already thriving in the camps. And so Acacia Creations was founded as a means to connect the skills of remote artisans with global consumers.
Thanks to the work and the income generated through Acacia Creations, they've seen more and more families relying less on subsistence farming along with an overall improvement in quality of living. All of their products are fairly traded and artisans are paid a wage well above the national average. Even the wood comes from an abundant source of olive trees and it’s purchased from private landowners rather than the government to ensure resources return back to the people.
