Fine Hand-Crafted Treasures From Around the Globe
8” Recycled Paper Star Lantern
This paper star lantern is handmade in New Delhi, India. They are made by a local company that employs 150 artisans (100 of whom are women) and provides healthcare assistance to new mothers. The stars are made from discarded cotton off cuts then pulped and turned into tree-free paper. The paper is then printed and stamped by hand.
After moving to Kenya in January 2007 and working in refugee camps throughout East Africa, Maura Kroh decided to found Acacia Creations. She noticed a lot of talent and artistic heritage, but artisans had no way to access consumers who would buy their work. Acacia Creations was started later that year with the goal of empowering artisans through their skills.
Acacia Creations has its own studio where they provide artisan training, as well as health insurance and interest-free loans to employees and partners in Kenya. And in 2013, Acacia Creations expanded partnerships beyond Africa, and now has artisan partners in India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi, Ethiopia, Morocco and Tunisia.
